Election

Introduction

It should be understood that the basis for election is always God’s Grace. God’s Election is based upon His plan and God’s plan is designed according to His perfect character. God sees no good in man that would warrant blessing man in any way whatsoever. God only operates on the basis of His plan and His provision through Grace. This provision is provided without attachment to merit or works. In God’s view, man has nothing to offer besides being an object of His abounding grace.

Terms used for Election

Often the words "called" and "chosen" are used for election.

(Gal. 1:6) I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:

Christ is the elected one.

(Isa. 42:1a) Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; . . . .

(1 Peter 2:6) Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

The believer’s election is based on Christ’s election. The facilitation of our election is salvation by which we are placed in union with Christ. The Holy Spirit sanctifies and regenerates us as we are entered into our new position with Christ. His election becomes our election.

(Eph. 1:4a) According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world,

(1 Peter 1:2a) Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, . . . . .

(2 Thess. 2:13b) . . . . because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

Election is designed around God’s plan and purpose.

(Rom. 8:28) And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Election took place in eternity past.

Election is executed with God’s omniscience in effect.

(Rom. 8:29a) For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, . . . .

(1 Peter 1:2a) Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, . . . . .

Election is the possession of every believer. We are already the elect of God.

(Col. 3:12) Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

Election takes place at the moment of salvation.

(2 Thess. 2:13b) . . . . because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

(1 Cor. 1:9) God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

(1 Cor. 1:24) But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

Election is the foundation of the Church.

(1 Thess. 1:4) Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.

Election is based on Grace. No human merit is involved in election.

(Gal. 1:15b) . . . . .and called me by his grace,
